Water Safety

I am stunned. I am heart broken. I am speechless. Kids keep dying from drowning. It's only May. I am begging you on my hands and knees to watch your children around ANY WATER. It doesn't have to be a swimming pool or a big lake, it could be in your home bath tub.
Earlier this week, Jennifer, who is a high school friend of Chris's emailed me about a little 3 year old passing away. He was a friend of her nephews. That little boy was the third child drowning in May that I knew of that closely effected friends and family. Yesterday, a fourth who had been on Life Support since Mother's Day couldn't fight anymore. We can all say the "what ifs" and the "oh the parents should have been watching them" but as parents we all know it only takes a second for something to happen. They are fast, they are mischievous, they are smart and they will get away from you.

My Aunt Debbie who owns Fun Pools and Spas in Texarkana had this to say in an email. Some of us were talking about it on a mass email on FB.

Hey Whitney, I am so glad you have addressed this issue. One drowning is one too many. Being in the swimming pool business we can't stress safety enough. Many people inquire about pool alarms which attach to the side of the swimming pool. Price range of $350. People see the price tag and not the effect. I like the gate / door alarm, a before the fact alarm. If someone passes through the invisible beam an alarm sets off. Price range under $80.00. In public: apartments, hotels, and camp pools, new federal safety laws were passed in 2007. The gov. has granted all properties (1) yr to become compliant, so... Dec. 31, 2008 was the deadline to update. New requirements are painted break lines on the pool steps, and a break line to define the deep end, safety vacuum alert system for a single main drain line, special anti-entrapment main drain covers, tiles with depth markers, No Dive tiles. (VGB Act) Be careful!!!!

So please, please, please be careful and protect your children. Even in a life jacket, toddlers can't hold their heads above water if they get turned sideways or on their bellies.
